It is bright and clear and cool in Cambridge today. These days are the best interruptions of an otherwise dreary winter. On these days, the sky is a soft blue that blends into white toward the horizon, and it feels so clean. There is nothing standing between us.

The Illiterate
Touching your goodness, I am like a man Who turns a letter over in his hand And you might think this was because the hand Was unfamiliar but, truth is, the man Has never had a letter from anyone; And now he is both afraid of what it means And ashamed because he has no other means To find out what it says than to ask someone. His uncle could have left the farm to him, Or his parents died before he...

rediscovering old quotes
uglyofwalruses: perhaps we don’t fully recover from our first loves. perhaps, in the extravagance of youth, we give our devotions easily and all but arbitrarily, on the mistaken assumption that we’ll always have more to give. —michael cunningham, a home at the end of the world

there's something about delilah
i think i’m allergic to my cousin’s dog, delilah. or maybe it’s a combination of delilah/tree pollen/nyc air. anyhow, sniffles and sneezes and itches abound!

The Glory
The glory of the beauty of the morning, The cuckoo crying over the untouched dew; The blackbird that has found it, and the dove That tempts me on to something sweeter than love; White clouds ranged even and fair as new-mown hay; The heat, the stir, the sublime vacancy Of sky and meadow and forest and my own heart: - The glory invites me, yet it leaves me scorning All I can ever do, all I...

Maximum Emotion
Stacey D’Erasmo came to Writers in the Parlor yesterday and read from her newest book, The Sky Below. At one point someone asked a question about the relationship between The Sky Below and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Part of her reply to this question really struck me: In ancient Greek or Roman Mythology, when a mortal reached a point of maximum emotion—maximum grief, maximum terror,...

Conversations with Randos on Sunny Days
White Girl: But you should know that you shouldn't go to [name of nightclub redacted].
Me: Why?
White Girl: Because there are *drops voice to a whisper* BLACK *raises voice again* people there.
Me: *puzzled look*
White Girl: I mean, obviously there's nothing wrong with *whispers* BLACK *raises voice* people. I have *whispers* BLACK *raises voice* friends, you know. But it's just a little *whispers* GHETTO *raises voice* because of that. So just so you know.
Me: Uhh...

Me at the moment this past month. But spring is here! I’ve been up till the wee hours of the morning multiple times this week, and every morning as dawn breaks I hear the fresh first stirrings of the day. It’s an odd time to feel peaceful, since by then I’m ready to claw my eyes out as I frantically finish a paper, but for a few lovely moments the blur of work fades into the...

We had Rose Styron come and speak at the Harvard College Human Rights Advocates general meeting last night, and I was bowled over by the stories she told us. This tiny, sweet, grandmotherly woman who looks so unassuming is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. And I got to six next to her!  Ahhhh!!!! Highlights of the evening: 1. “I first met my good friend Gabriel Garcia Marquez...
